Doing a PhD is one of the highest level academic degrees that can be awarded in which you specialize in a specific subject in a certain research domain.

After an intensive period of original scientific research, you will write your results in a doctoral thesis which you will publicly defend for an examination committee. You will receive the title of doctor upon succeeding. This is the highest academic degree that can be awarded by a Flemish university. A basic prerequisite is a thorough interest for a certain niche, coupled with a broad societal interest ánd the willingness to commit for an innovative scientific research project for four years. Most candidates for a doctor's degree are employed, during that period, by the university as scientific staff or in the context of a research project.
